Notes- The names for the Bach chorales are the tune names for the original hymn melodies, none of which were actually composed by Bach. For example, selection number 24, "Werde Munter 2" is a Bach setting for the Hymn melody Werde Munter, written by Johann Schop (1600-1665). This particular arrangement is from Bach's Cantata 147. The same melody is used for many Hymns and is known in those contexts by the Hymn names, one example being "Jesu Bleibet Meine Freude", or, in English, "Jesu, Joy of Man's Desiring". Selections 1,3,5,6,8,9,10,11,12,13, and 16-24 are J.S. Bach arrangements. The other arrangements and the midi sequencing were done by M. Berst.
In the second section the selections are also identified by tune names, although they are all well known by the names for Hymns with which they are associated. Examples: Salve Regina Coelitum- "Hail, Holy Queen"; St. Theodolph- "All Glory, Laud and Honor"; Darwall's 148th-"Rejoice, the Lord is King"; Hyfrydol- "Come, Thou Long Expected Jesus"; Easter Hymn-"Christ the Lord is Risen Today". All of the arrangements and sequences in the second section were done by M. Berst. The tunes are all in the public domain, however, the arrangements and sequencing represent a certain amount of work and should be respected as such. Feel free to use them for non-commercial use, being sure to credit the source and not claim the work as your own. A simple line, "arrangements by..." and a link back to this page would be an appreciated courtesy. It is also polite to send a quick e-mail message of acknowledgement- Use this link to say "hi" to the arranger.
If you wish to use these arrangements at your own site, there is one additional benefit in asking first (other than the knowledge of having done the right thing), that being the fact that we have hundreds of Hymn midis and we may have just the melody you are looking for in our library.
